After the birth of a child the question of the biological sex of
the child is not always that easy to answer. If the child has got
the sexual characteristic which is clearly male or female, the
midwife will say: „It is a boy.“ Or „It is a girl.“ But if the sexual
characteristics are not clearly recognizable as male or female,
the child is definitely intersexual. Doctors speak of a variation of
sex development. In Germany parents can then decide whether
the child is recorded as male, female or diverse in the register
of birth or whether the entry remains open.
Intersexual children are normally healthy and often do not need
any medical treatment. But parents are often unsure about
which name to give the child, what to tell friends and relatives
and how to raise that child.
If you have an intersexual child or care for one please feel free
to contact us with all of your questions.
